#1128 for broadcast on 2CH Sydney, 20 September 2015.
A chief aim of the parent-driven lobby group, Fairness in Religion in Schools is to abolish the practice of volunteer-run Special Religious Education in NSW schools.
In recent months, the group has appeared so anti-Christian that disclaimers on their website and social media state they are not “The Society for the Advancement of Atheism.”
In August the group argued that school prayer groups organised by Scripture Union posed a real danger to students because Scripture Union believed in the Bible which contained stories of violence.
According to their official Facebook page, they informed the Department of Education this week that provision of Special Religious Education violated the rights of children and parents.
Perhaps they should call on the minister to ban the teaching of history, or drama, or the use of news stories in the curriculum. What is most laughable is that they should call their group “Fairness in Religion in Schools.” Their track record is manifestly unfair.
I’m Rod Benson for the NSW Council of Churches.
