Two women reportedly die every week in Australia as a result of domestic violence. Men also suffer family violence, and children too.
But most casualties are women who are emotionally, physically or sexually abused by their male sexual partner or former partner. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced an advisory panel for a multi-million dollar action plan to combat domestic violence.
But no one seems to be asking a key question: why are rates of fatal violence against women increasing, while murder rates in general are decreasing?
Researchers at Family Voice Australia believes it is because:
(a) fewer couples marry today, and domestic violence rates are significantly higher in de facto relationships;
(b) more men are addicted to free online violent porn promoting the abuse and exploitation of women; and
(c) the “soft on drugs” political environment encourages drug addiction, leading to violence.
They may well have a point. Over to you, Prime Minister.
