Whether it’s politics or religion, music tastes or health issues, some conversations can become demeaning and destructive – not least on social media.
Author and broadcaster Dr Michael Brown is no stranger to explosive outbursts and threats in response to the facts and opinions he shares. Recently he suggested five reasons why Christians should bless those who curse them.
First, it follows the example of Jesus, who called us to love our enemies. Second, like God, we should show mercy to those who walk in what we see as ignorance and unbelief. Third, we reap what we sow. Fourth, words of grace and patience produce more good fruit than words of anger and frustration. And finally, when we bless those who curse us, we break the cycle of anger and hatred.
As Paul counselled the Christians at Rome: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Rom 12:21).
