#1136 for broadcast on 2CH Sydney, 11 October 2015
Anti-abortion campaigner Troy Newman is a member of the Board of the Centre for Medical Progress, the organisation which exposed Planned Parenthood’s involvement in selling body parts of aborted babies.
Mr Newman was invited to Australia by Right to Life Australia, and issued with a visa in July, but this was cancelled by Australian Immigration Minister Peter Dutton, and he was deported on arrival in Australia last week.
High Court Justice Justice Geoffrey Nettle said the Department was justified in revoking Mr Newman’s visa over fears that his speaking tour could pose “a risk” to the community.
Mr Newman has co-authored a pro-life book, Their Blood Cries Out, citing biblical references to murder such as Genesis 9:6, but neither he nor Operation Rescue appear to advocate violence.
The case highlights the fine line between protecting or denying freedom of speech, and invites debate on the kind of society we want to live in.
