According to a paper published by two research institutes at the London School of Economics ahead of a major climate summit in Paris this December, the economic benefits of tackling climate change by cutting carbon emissions far outweigh the costs.
The key benefits include new jobs, improved health and energy efficiency, and reduced pollution and environmental degradation.
Report coauthor Fergus Green says the urgent need to “decarbonise the global economy” can be achieved with a net benefit to participating nations.
He says his group’s research findings indicate investment in climate change mitigation is demonstrably affordable, and will deliver mutual gains as long as the world’s national economies work together.
But he said, “Those who think there is an incentive for countries to ‘free-ride’ on the climate protection provided by others are very much mistaken.”
Good news for God’s good earth, and a clear warning for the Abbott government and their ilk.
