Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter came out last week saying he thought “Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else,” and would therefore approve of gay marriage.
Not so Sydney Anglican Dr Mark Thomson, Principal of Moore Theological College, who on Monday released a detailed statement of biblical and theological reasons for rejecting gay marriage. He says:
The union of a man and a woman in a life-long exclusive sexual partnership pictures something both profound and consistent in the purposes of God…
marriage is not just a matter of tinkering with interchangeable or even dispensable details; it is tampering with something deeply woven into the fabric of reality and necessary for human flourishing. What happens to the Bible’s teaching about Christ and the church if marriage is no longer the relation of a husband and a wife?
