Are ISIS supporters traitors?

#1077 for broadcast on 2CH Sydney, 24 May 2015

No doubt you’re aware of the ongoing terrorist threat posed by young Australians who are radicalised by extremist Islamist propaganda, and find their way to Syria and Iraq where they fight alongside ISIS forces.

Now it’s been revealed that the federal government is in contact with some of these misguided individuals, and there’s a plan to let some of them return to Australia.

But the forces they are fighting against include Australian troops, which means they should be regarded as traitors, and we have laws to deal with traitors.

On the other hand, the government may want to tell their stories to discourage others from following a similar path, for the “greater good.” It’s a tactical mind battle.

Often in life we are faced with several ethical options, none of which are what we would prefer, and we are obliged to choose the greater good, or the lesser evil.

I’m Rod Benson for the NSW Council of Churches.
