#981 for broadcast on 2CH Sydney, 19 Oct 2014.
The Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce, of which I am a member, has always had a particular concern for the welfare and treatment of refugee and asylum seeker children. The Taskforce’s report, Protecting the Lonely Children, launched in July, documented a broad array of concerns about unaccompanied children in detention, and called on Government to address the issues.
The Churches Refugee Taskforce has now written to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to respectfully urge the Commission to make an immediate and public commitment to investigate the allegations of sexual abuse, the conditions, and systemic issues giving rise to such abuse, across Australia’s immigration detention network.
The Taskforce argues that existing mechanisms are not sufficient to fully expose the ongoing sexual abuse allegations arising in Australian Immigration detention. We’re talking about abuse of vulnerable refugee and asylum seeker children who have sought our protection from persecution, torture and death. They need our protection.
I’m Rod Benson for the NSW Council of Churches.
