On February 2, Christians from a wide range of churches in Australia will join to celebrate Christian Heritage Sunday, a public event launched last year and endorsed by the NSW Council of Churches.
All Australians, and especially Christians, need to be aware that the early history of commencing a British community in Australia, and establishing the Australian legal system, had their origins in the Christian faith.
The first Christian Service was conducted on Sunday 3 February 1788 just after the first convict fleet arrived in Port Jackson. The fleet’s Chaplain was the Reverend Richard Johnson, and he conducted the first service of worship on Australian soil.
On February 2 this year, Christian congregations are encouraged to pause and remember that first service, and first sermon, and the heritage it symbolised and gave birth to in this land, and give thanks for this bold declaration of Christian commitment.
I’m Rod Benson for the NSW Council of Churches.
