According to entertainment news reports, the Disney Channel plans to feature a lesbian couple on a 2014 episode of the children’s sitcom Good Luck Charlie. Apparently Disney is “testing the water” with content many Americans would label immoral.
The Disney brand has traditionally represented what most of us regard as good, fun and wholesome entertainment. Most parents look for movies and TV programs that reflect their values and that they feel comfortable letting their children watch.
So the Disney brand’s apparent shift to becoming a “groundbreaker in immorality” is unwelcome.
Research shows time and again that movies and TV programs that have particular moral content (though some consider it old-fashioned) actually make more money at the box office and on television than their more raunchier and politically correct competition.
But profits are secondary to the moral obligation that companies such as Disney have to millions of parents and children around the world.
