It is rather ironic that former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who identifies as a conscientious Christian, came out this week in support of same sex marriage laws, while current Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who claims to be an atheist and lives with her boyfriend, continues to support the church’s traditional stance of marriage defined exclusively as the union of a man and a woman.
Sydney Anglican Archbishop Dr Peter Jensen said Mr Rudd’s comments on same sex marriage failed to “grapple sufficiently with the question of what marriage is and what it is for.”
Dr Jensen told The Australian newspaper that marital sex, and “the precious differences between men and women” could not be replicated by same sex couples or by any other bond.
He said, “Marriage is too important for all of us – it is not a church-state issue … What cannot be done should not be attempted.”
