As the Catholic Church considers the implications of the shock announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict, Christians around the world are praying for his health and for wisdom as Catholic leaders select their next Pontiff.
Evangelical Christians also take the opportunity to look beyond the uncertainty of the present to the ultimate reality to which all genuine witnesses of the truth of Jesus Christ point. As Daniel Sanchez of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary put it:
In a time of transition and uncertainty, it is important that we remind ourselves and our Roman Catholic friends that Jesus, through the person of the Holy Spirit, is always with us and never leaves us. It is also important to emphasize the fact that it is through a personal experience of salvation in Jesus Christ that we can have the assurance of His presence with us and the hope of being with Him when we die.
