The threat posed by a decision of the British Parliament to legalise same-sex marriage is that it’s only a matter of time before the protection of religious freedom is eroded by a fresh campaign by secularists to destroy the Christian understanding and practice of marriage.
One of the arguments against homosexual marriage put by Australian church leaders is that expanding the legal definition of marriage to include various intimate arrangements poses a potential threat to the human right to religious freedom.
The churches don’t want to impose their morality by law on unwilling citizens. But they do want a guarantee that their religious freedom will not be trampled by governments and courts where there is a conflict of moral principles.
And that is a guarantee that can’t be given. And we can be sure that no stone will be left unturned, and no loophole left untested, as activists try to deny others their religious freedom.
I’m Rod Benson for the NSW Council of Churches.
